In the US, the collection of sales tax on retail sales is a state function. With the exception of Alaska, Delaware, Hawaii, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon, the remaining US states collect sales tax on retail sales. Whether you live in the US or not, it’s your responsibility to know what the laws of your location require regarding the collection of sales tax on online sales. Despite popular belief to the contrary, online retail sales are taxable. According to the Small Business Administration, “If your business has a physical presence in a state, such as a store, office or warehouse, you must collect applicable state and local sales tax from your customers. If you do not have a presence in a particular state, you are not required to collect sales taxes.” For most of us, our homes are our offices and warehouses and thus constitute a ‘physical presence’. Contact the appropriate department in your state for specific requirements for the collection and remittance of state and local sales taxes.
While Zibbet doesn’t provide a sales tax application, PayPal does. There you can setup sales tax calculations for whatever US state you need. The sales tax calculation tool also has an international option for those who need it. You’ll find the ‘Set tax rates’ link under ‘Shipping and Tax’ near the bottom of the Merchant Services page. I recommend that you include a statement in either your shop policies or item descriptions or both, letting buyers know that sales tax will be added when payment is made at PayPal.

Over the last year, we’ve received notifications that several Zibbet sellers have passed away. Those notifications have come from friends and family members of the deceased Zibbeters. We’ve also received inquiries from buyers who’ve not received their purchases or responses from messages sent to the sellers of the items they purchased. Several of these inquiries have come from buyers whose purchases were made from shops with excellent feedback regarding shipping quickly and communicating well with their buyers. Such inquiries cause me to wonder if the sellers have experienced some sort of emergency or other circumstance making it impossible for them to tend their shops. Our only way of communicating with our sellers is via the email address that is listed on their accounts. Often, in situations like these, we never hear from a seller when we attempt to reach them on behalf of a buyer. This raises the question, “What’s your back up plan in case of an emergency?”
Over a year ago, I addressed this question in the Success on Zibbet article In Case of an Emergency. Please take a look at that article for some suggestions on developing a plan that will help your family and/or friends manage your shop in the event of an emergency.
If you’re going to be away for a while, please place your shop in Vacation Mode. Vacation Mode 1 is the preferred choice if you’ll be closed for an extended period of time. Vacation Mode 2 is appropriate when you’ll just be gone for a couple of days. Remember that while your shop is in Vacation Mode 2, sales can still be made on your account. If you’ll be gone to a craft show or other event where you may sell an item listed in your shop, Vacation Mode 1 is probably the better choice, even for short periods of time.
for the item to be made and shipped. Be realistic about your time constraints. PayPal requires that disputes be filed within 45 days of the original transaction date. If completion of the order will take longer than this, it’s good business to let a buyer know this before they’ve made the purchase. As a seller, put yourself in the place of your buyer and provide the same information you would want to know before making a purchase.
Eggs have been a valuable food since the earliest of times. Although their nutritional value is often disputed, eggs are widely used in many types of dishes, both sweet and savory, whether prepared alone or mixed with other ingredients. The egg symbol is also related to the spring season which includes the holidays of Easter and Passover. Decorate with eggs. Wear eggs. Hang eggs on the wall. The sky’s the limit and Zibbet celebrates the season and the food with over 600 egg related ideas. Eggs-trordinary! My name is Carrie and I have been crafting since my early teenage years. As you may notice from my shop, I dabble in many types of crafting. One week I may be sewing, another you might find me creating cards, and I always seem to have a crochet project in the works! I guess that makes me one of those people who like to keep their hands busy!Sixteen years ago I was diagnosed with an eye disease which caused significant loss of vision. However, I continued to work outside the home as well as craft in my spare time. Two years ago I suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm requiring emergency surgery and many months of recovery. More vision was lost due to the aneurysm and I am no longer able to work outside the home. Despite my limited vision, I’ve learned to adapt so I can continue with my love of crocheting, sewing and card making. Although it may take me longer than it did in the past to complete a craft project, I can’t imagine ever giving in to what I can’t do and rather focus on what I can.
I am the mother of a 17 year old daughter and stepmother to four grown stepsons. I enjoy cooking, baking and creating things for the entire family. My husband, Jim, and I enjoy road trips to the family cottage on Sebago Lake in Maine, upstate New York to visit my youngest stepson in college, the beaches of Rhode Island, and anywhere we’ve never been.We live on a peninsula which enables us to fish, enjoy walks in the park, and watch boats traveling in and out of the channel just outside our door.I often find myself inspired by the changing New England seasons. I tend to work with blues, grays, and whites in the winter, oranges, browns and reds in the Fall, pastel shades in the Spring, and brighter colors in the Summer months.
I believe my creativity was inherited from my grandmother, Hilda. I have wonderful childhood memories of her quilting on a Singer treadle sewing machine, crocheting, and oil painting. At 91 years old she continues to do beautiful embroidery work!I am passionate about passing my crafting knowledge on to my daughter. Although she is a busy teenager, she is often creating scrapbooks and she loves photography. That makes me smileI love the ease of customizing my shop. It’s very simple to change the look and feel of my shop for the seasons or my mood. The sales mode feature is so helpful. I can easily host a sale by section or the entire shop. I also love being able to set coupon codes to give to my customers for special promotions.
I enjoy browsing the wide variety of wonderful shops that can be found on Zibbet.I would like an invoice feature for printing customer order and also to track my sales.I promote my work through local craft shows and social sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
I recommend other Zibbeters spend time in the Community Forums. I belong to several groups and have found both the forums and groups to be beneficial sources for bouncing ideas off of.In the future I see myself continuing with my variety of crafting! I would also like to learn new skills such as knitting, cake decorating, and rug hooking.

I am an artist, vintage wrangler with three online shops, a gardener, a parent to two Dawg Boyz, one cat & an adult son with cerebral palsy. Thank goodness the cat is female.
I love gardening, especially having a bee & butterfly friendly garden.
With selling vintage online? I truly believe in the pieces I offer – I really get a kick out of finding items & want others to have the opportunity to acquire these finds! And vintage hunting is my recreation - I have met some wonderful people across the states, the world, through the shops….
So, Great Enthusiasm – I am a textile junkie – I LOVE mixing stitching, cloth, thread, paper ephemera, recycled art for mixed media – I have even had pieces in Somerset Publications - and am wanting to get back to sewing in conventional & nonconventional manners. Being able to mix the visual & tactile is just fantastic….The community is one of the best tempered. The site is super easy to add listings to. And then there is the lack of listing fees and the response of Administration is fantastic! Kudos to all….I think the search attributes need some refinements/adjustments, plus Batch Editing would be greatly appreciated.
I utilize Twitter the most; I think Pinterest helps and I think blogging is very important.Absolutely join the Lifetime Plan – best value of any site….1) well, yes, making money at Making Art 2) able to go travel more 3) able go back to school – which includes math courses – I want to conquer some dragons from younger years & 4) be more content with my life….
