14. Charms and their many uses...

So, I have the small lanyards for cell phone charms, and just discovered that these could also be used to hang charms on wine glasses.

What other uses do you know of for these? I'd love to get some more ideas.... This will help me increase tags as well as discover new ways to market them. Also, depending on how I am marketing them, I can use that to determine the image(s) to be burned on the wooden discs.

Thanks for your help!

6. vendor insurance

Anyone have a suggestion for reliable, affordable vendor insurance?  I will have a booth at the local county fair and they require insurance.  I have only set up a booth a few times and all at small venues where I didn't need insurance.  I would love to hear everyone's advice.

Thanks,

Question by Amy: Has anyone heard of the online selling market place Zibbet?
This question is for people who sell handmade items online and thought to ask if they’ve heard of this site:

Thank you for placing your question here. This is the first time I have heard of it although they mention 2 girls that have been their member since 2009. They mention buying and selling handmade goods so I will be referring craftsers to them.

Hi I am Valeria. I love to create beautiful things. I do cross stitch, sewing, beading, crocheting, macrame, cooking. I am also very good with the construction things! I believe God gave us hands to bring the joy, to help each other. As my mom says “Are you depressed? What does this word mean? You are just lazy. When you do nothing your world is falling down”

20. Enjoy life... it is not all work

Most of us know that life is not all about work but sometimes we need reminding that the precious things in life are not based around work or money but around the people we love.

Tuesday was my 50 something birthday! I woke up and one of the first things I did, was have a potential nasty fall directly onto metal steps outside on the cold and wet grounds. The edge of the steps just missed my spine by a centimetre (less than half and inch). I was so shocked and scared that I had done some serious damage to my spinal column, but once the shock wore off, I realized that I was very lucky to come away with a just nasty bruise and will be sore for a few days to come but no damage! Later on, my youngest son, who still lives at home, got up early and made my favourite breakfast. During the course of the morning, a few phone calls were received, wishing me a happy birthday, including my girls who live 60 minutes and 180 minutes away respectively. They informed me that I was to keep Saturday afternoon and evening free as they were taking me out for my birthday then. They would be in touch with me later with the final details. Lunch was lovingly cooked by my son yet again and then in the afternoon I heard the front door open and a few moments later in walk my 2 girls bedecked in giant ribbon bows - as my presents! What a delightful surprise. They both took time off work and were to stay overnight before heading home the next morning! (and I still get a night out with them on  Saturday too!) My darling hubby cooked up a fantastic meals for all of us including a 'adopted' son who also joined us. I received my gifts and we played games and just thoroughly enjoyed each others company!

My family members are my best friends and so precious to me. I love each one of them dearly and I know they love me! I really need to get a recent photo of all of us together! But here is one with my girls!

5. I MISSED you all!

Hi everyone! I have missed everyone heer soooo much. I have had a streak of bad luck. I spent 6 weeks in the hospital then went to rehabilitation and therapy. Then my brother in law passed away and my mother went into palative care so due to being unable to fly we had a 4000 kilometer drive to Nova Scotia, and then back again. I'M NOT LOOKNG FOR SYMPATHY, I guess I just needed to vent for a minute.

Anyway, I have been unable to crochet until just recently, but the time did give me time to do a lot of creative thinking, so I have a lot of ideas up my sleeve just waiting for me to put them into reality. I'm looking forward to listing some of my items I created before but just didn't have a chance.

I'm also really excited to get back into crocheting again - my fingers have been so lonely :)

My computer also died during this time and by the time we got it repaired and my husband checked it out, I had about a zillion emails of all the postings by everyone here. I couldn't check each one out but a sampling of them showed what wonderful work everyone here has been doing.

Thank you to all of you who sent me messages of good wishes, Bless all of you. I'm off now to do some crocheting if my fingers remember what to do, LOL.

18. Would you be interested in a support/mentorship group that meets in the chat room?

Hi, I think the forum is great, but sometimes I just want to get together with like minded business persons and discuss goals, ideas, things that are working and things that aren't.  If I were to start a group for shop owners that want to support each other with setting goals and sharing insights that met in the chat room, would you be interested?

I was thinking it would be most beneficial to have it sort of organized.  For example, if there are 5 people that show, each person would have a turn to share a success/issue/question/request and the rest of the group would give their insight, then it would be the next persons turn.

I've always found that having a group that meets at regular intervals and shares, helps me to be more motivated and successful.

What do you think?

Featured Zibbeter - ACraftyArab

Meet Koloud ‘Kay’ Tarapolsi, owner of A Crafty Arab and a Libyan American who creates art and crafts to promote a positive image of Arab culture.

She has been with Zibbet since 2009. You can find her on the Community Hub where she contributes to discussions. She is a proud member of a dozen Zibbet groups.

We are thrilled that Kay has chosen Zibbet to display her work. Please enjoy the interview, leave Kay a comment, and then use the Share tool so others can read it, too.

I’m a mom of three wonderful girls. I want them to grow up being proud of who they are and feel comfortable in their own skin. After our family decision that I become a stay-at-home mom, I had to revisit myself and decide what I wanted to do. I have always been in the art field and knew I needed to continue creating with art.  Then 9/11 happened and the world was changed forever. I felt that I could take the stereotype of what an Arab and/or a Muslim had become in America and help change it. I particularly wanted to display the positive aspect of our extraordinary rich heritage to my daughters. I began by making greeting cards in Arabic and sending them to my friends, coworkers, neighbors. Everyone loved my cards and asked to buy them so that was how A Crafty Arab was born. Since then I’ve created cards in Farsi and Urdu. Now I’m adding a line of fun and bright education products. I started by developing my Arabic Alphabet Animal poster, and I will soon add numbers, shapes, foods, and colours, to the line. This product line will eventually include flashcards, placemats, board books and more educational tools. All products will be available for schools and other moms who wish to promote our heritage.

It so important to teach your children that we are all on this planet together and need to help each other. I’m very active in my daughters’ lives as a Girl Scout Troop Leader and an Art Docent in their school. I’ve also been an Art Docent at the Seattle Art Museum for 17 years and have been Board Director of the Arab Center as well as an Art Commissioner for the city where I live. I also started a non-profit in June 2001 to promote Arab artists called Arab Artists Resources & Training.  I love volunteering and giving back to my community.

My mom inspires me.  She has a PhD and is active in her community and I admire her immensely. Because she wears a hijab, people look at her and speak to her in a way that is full of misunderstanding and distrust. I hope to change that through my artwork and crafts.

I look up to any crafter or artist out there that step out of the ordinary. I love to see new combinations of mediums that step so far out of the box that they are in a circle with never ending possibilities. For example, Kathy Cano Murillo does such an amazing job of taking the Mexican culture and making it fun, bright and colorful in such an uplifting way. I would love to create an Arab crafts book someday and have her do my introduction.  That is a life goal.

St Augustine once said “the world is a book and those who do not travel, only read the first page” and I’ve used that as my motto for life.  Travel is my passion!  I’ve been to 45 of the 50 US states, North Africa, Europe, Mexico and Canada with Australia and Japan as my next dream vacations. If I had unlimited funds I’d take my girls traveling the globe.   My current top travel wish is that things settle down in Libya soon so I can visit family that I haven’t seen in over 30 years!

My favorite part of Zibbet is the staff. I love that they are so responsive, whether in email or on the forums. I had a specific request on another website to add Eid (a Muslim holiday) as a choice of categories and it’s been three years that no one has helped. I asked on Zibbet and it was taken care of within a few months. Imagine having a landlord that came over in the dead of winter to fix your heater on the day it broke instead of saying he’ll get around to it this summer!?!  I was in shock that staff here really cared about making the site work for their sellers and immediately decided that this was the place to be.

I would love to see how many times an item has been viewed next to it in the shop front. We can currently see Individual Item when we are in My Zibbet, but I want to see those numbers next to items not in my shop. I love to use the Share It button under each product to promote other people’s items, so it would be nice to see what isn’t getting traffic and listing that for them.

I am a social network junkie. I am on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Kaboodle, TeachStreet, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon and Blogspot. I include my Zibbet business cards in every thank you note to customers (even if they buy from my main website or another website) and I have been known to pass them out to strangers in craft stores. But the number one way is that I always sign my shop link with my name.   Not just in the Zibbet forum but also other places that I post.  The more that people see the word Zibbet, the more well known it will be.

The best thing you can do for your shop is to fill it with your wares.  The fuller the shop, the more you show up on the search engines and the more options you are giving your customers of things they can buy. If you have a Basic Shop, there really is no excuse for not having 50 items in it and if you have a Premium Shop, you should have a minimum of 200 items.  Oh, and check your SEOs to make sure you are showing up on the search engines!

Well known as a crafter who has brought Arab crafts into mainstream America. I want to be on morning TV shows to showcase Ramadan crafts and in magazines with tutorials on kid’s Arabic projects, and of course more traveling!

Fantastic Five: Red, White & Blue USA Style

Summertime and parades go hand-in-hand in the Unites States of America. On Zibbet you will find thousands of handcrafted items “Made in the USA.” But many other countries also enjoy creating American patriotic crafts.

Get ready for the 4th of July by doing all your shopping on Zibbet. You’ll find table decorations, party and picnic supplies, and the perfect patriotic outfits & accessories for you and your pets.

After reading about today’s Fantastic Five, you can search Red White and Blue to find over 500 items. Also search Fourth of July, Independence Day, July 4th, and Patriotic to find more USA art, vintage & supplies.

1. American Flag Pillow by The Pine Cone Tea Cup $18: I love this rustic, primitive, country, throw pillow. It would look great on a porch swing. The generous 16? x 10? size makes it perfect for taking a nap in a hammock.

2. Handmade Patriotic Chevron Bracelet by RainboWireJewelry $25: Show your American pride when you wear this dangle bracelet that incorporates, glass, wood, silver and copper. I like the fancy spiral clasp.

3. Americana Baseball by Yummy Cuppy Crafts $3: You know you want one! How can you resist a hand painted leather baseball? Use as a simple decoration for all the patriotic holidays or buy a basketful of them for party favors.

4. Independence Day in Southport by Mary Ellen Golden $30: Mary Ellen says every year on the 4th of July the town of Southport, North Carolina bedecks itself in flags and throws a big parade. This is Mary Ellen’s giclée print of her original water color painting.

5. Americana Plaid Medium Tote/Purse by Creative Jen V $20: If you’ll be going to parades this summer you’ll need this Americana tote bag to bring along the sunscreen, water bottles and other supplies. Solid red duck cloth is fabricated into four pockets on the inside to keep those liquids upright.

Who loves a parade?

Your Items Are In Google!

I sometimes hear Zibbet sellers comment that their items aren’t being found in Google searches. I know that it can be frustrating to search Google for a particular listing or a shop name and not find it on the first search results page. Today, I  want to assure you that your items are being indexed by Google and that they are being found in Google searches. There’s a simple way for you to see a list of all the pages that Google has indexed for your shop’s URL. Here’s how…

First, go to http://www.google.com.

Next, in the search box, type “site:www.zibbet.com/username”. DO NOT type the quotation marks. DO replace “username” with the username for your shop. Type the word site and then a colon followed immediately by www.zibbet.com/username, replacing username with your shop’s username.

Here’s an example using my LOC Design Studio shop:

Press Enter. You should see a list of all of the pages indexed by Google for www.zibbet.com/username.

In this example, Google shows 507 indexed pages for locdesignstudio. Notice that in addition to item listing pages, profile, policies, feedback, FP, and section pages are also included. If you click the Cached link, which appears immediately after the URL for the page, you can see when Google last looked at your page as well as what the page looked like at the time. The cached version of the page may not look like the actual page looks now. But that’s OK. When someone finds that page in a search, they’ll be taken to the current page.

I hope that when you try this you’ll feel reassured and confident that Google is finding your pages and indexing them. If your shop is new, it may take a couple of days for Google to find you. The same is true when you add new items to your shop. Google may index them immediately or it may take a little while.

Come back next week to learn more about Google searches.

Best wishes for much success on Zibbet!

Stacy -

You have a very nice shop.

Since you ask for comments, I will throw out a few minor suggestions.

It is important to catch the eye of a shopper immediately when she first hits your shop.  If you could trim a little bit from your welcome message, it would increase the amount of product shoppers see without scrolling down, increasing the chance a shopper will be interested enough to look seriously rather than to bounce out of your shop.

You indicate that among the uses of your houses are as children's playhouses.  To me, and apparently also to Webster, a playhouse is a structure in which children play.  It would be a rather diminutive child who could fit inside one of your houses.  Perhaps the term playhouse means something different in Fort Smith, but consider whether that term might be confusing.

Since some of the houses are intended to be usable as children's toys or a use that would result in frequent handling, such as a dog treat holder, you might want to comment on how sturdy those are, and whether they would tolerate some rough play or lots of handling.  I know paper mache can be surprisingly sturdy, but many shoppers may be hesitant to buy.

I like your photos.  When you are ready for a premium shop I think the larger thumbnails if you choose a 3-across layout would really flatter them and make them pop visually.  Your houses have a lot of detail that is lost in the smaller thumbnails, and you need your thumbnails to pique shoppers' interest to get them to the listing page.

In checking several of your listings I did not see any photos showing the top removed.  That might help shoppers to visualize how they would use the house to store items.  The photos on your Facebook page do a lot to help to understand the construction and uses of the houses.

Are you charging enough for the houses?  Your prices seem low for the workmanship that must go into these and in comparison to similar products I have seen.  I think you are going to do very well here at Zibbet.  It's good to have you here.

10. Tagging suggestion

Have you ever been on the front page of Zibbet and out of the corner of your eye you see something that looks interesting, but you had just clicked into the search. And if you go "back" a page you get a new front page of Zibbet, so the item you wanted to look closer at is no longer there to see.

I do that every day. So my suggestion about tags is to have one tag or tag phrase that says what it is. Or what the eye sees when seeing the picture quickly. For instance, I just saw a photo of a woman wearing a white suit, last second, but had already clicked the search link. I go back a page, but it's gone from the page.

So I went to the search bar and I typed in "white suit" because that is what I saw. The item did not come up. That means whoever posted a woman wearing a white suit did NOT use the tag word "white suit."

Whoever it is, might have used lots of good tags, like clothing, women, the type of fabric it was made of, office clothes, dressy, etc.

Let me see if I can find another actual example from the front page. Here's a screenshot of the front page right now:

I leave that page and then think, oh what was that purple striped thing? I go back, it's gone. But I can search for "purple stripe" and I will find it, right?

http://search.zibbet.com/search?c1=&page=5&query=purple+stripe

No, no purple stripe soap. It's not under lavender stripe either.

So that's all. Just a thought.

Judy

I don't see it as a terrible thing if the sold price shows.  I helps to keep prices competitive.

I did, however, check your sold items and couldn't find any prices.  Am I missing some details?

Perhaps the sold prices are only seen by the seller. Did you check your shop when you were not signed in to verify that the sold prices are really viewable to others?

LOC Design Studio (Vicki) Permalink Reply by LOC Design Studio (Vicki) on June 17, 2011 at 7:41am Prices are only visible to the seller of the items when that seller is logged in to his/her account. If you log out of your account and look at your sold items you won't see the prices. That's how others will see it as well. It's important to remember that when you are logged in, listings and sold items look slightly different than they do to the public. ? Reply

Vicki,

Anyone can see the price the items sold for in anyone's shop by clicking on the enlarge image. They can't see it in the listing, but they can see the price it sold for in the enlarged image.

Judy (Zibbet Moderator) Permalink Reply by Judy (Zibbet Moderator) on June 17, 2011 at 8:58am So it appears as though most people don't know that and most people wouldn't look at enlarged images when an item has been sold anyway. ? Reply
