Online Selling Trivia…Maybe Not! Part 2

Two weeks ago, I shared statistics that suggest that you should seriously consider offering international shipping from your Zibbet shop. Today I want to focus on an interesting statistic related to how online shoppers search for gifts. The results of a survey conducted by ChannelAdvisor Corp, and cited by InternetRetailer.com, indicate that when shopping online for gifts, consumers start 59% of their gift shopping trips on search engines. Only 28% start their gift shopping at marketplace sites such as Amazon while only 10% begin on a retailer’s web site. For the sake of this example, let’s substitute “Zibbet” for “Amazon” and “your shop” for “retailer’s web site”…

A case for more listings and SEO-friendly titles and descriptions In the course of presenting a lesson, a good teacher will repeat certain concepts and facts as a way of stressing their importance. If you are a regular reader of Success on Zibbet, you should recognize these two topics. If you haven’t been taking notes it’s not too late to start. This is important information that you should be writing down, committing to memory and putting into action in your shop. If you have been keeping up, then consider this a review.

More listings create more pages on Zibbet.  The more listing pages Zibbet has, the greater the chances of Zibbet listings being found in searches conducted using a search engine such as Google. The more often Zibbet pages are found, the more likely someone will click a link and land somewhere in Zibbet. The more times someone lands in Zibbet, the more likely they are to make a purchase, especially if they land in a well stocked, attractive shop with great photos and well written titles and descriptions.

Another essential component of being found in web searches is well written, SEO-friendly text. I’ve written about the importance of creating SEO-friendly text multiple times. For those of you who are just joining the class, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s our reponsibility as sellers to write titles and descriptions for our items that both humans and web spiders and bots can read and understand. The spiders and bots take the text that they find back to their search engines where it is indexed and made available every time a web search is conducted. Include appropriate keywords in your titles and descriptions and your items will be found more often in web searches and will gradually move up in page rank. For a more indepth discussion of SEO concepts, start with SEO 101: The Basics.

Whether you realize it or not, your shop is constantly being “tested” on the concepts covered by this lesson and others we’ve been providing in Success on Zibbet. Shop and item views along with sales could be indicators of how you’re doing. If you aren’t happy with your shop’s score, don’t despair. It’s never too late to make improvements based on the lessons we’ve been teaching. You have been taking notes haven’t you?

I encourage you to post your comments and questions so that we can continue to learn together.

Best wishes for much success on Zibbet!
