Does anyone out there have a fool-proof method for keeping squirrels away from the bird feeders? I have tried, quite UNsuccessfully, to discourage them with the hottest of chilis/sauces/etc as suggested - and turns out they rather like it!!!!!! BB Gun is a joke (I fire over/around/under - not AT); and hanging wind-socks only serves to make them feel more at home. Last Summer, at any given time, there were 10 at a time in the backyard. This Summer, I thought we might be on a roll, since there have been only 4, seemingly the same 4, same time of day, etc. Borrowed a couple of traps, set them out Monday (4 days ago), and the tally now is - 8 squirrels and 1 opossum have been deported to a nice woodsy park, and 10 remain in the backyard. How's that for the New Math!!!!! from 4 regulars, take away 8, to 10 remaining.......huh?
Having read all the wonderful $$-savers, recipes, etc., from you gifted people, I am SO hopeful that someone out there has the answer. I tried the BirdFeeder with the collapsible perches (you know the Expensive kind) and if I can find the picture in my files, I'll post it here.............
Thanks, all,
Grandmother Carolyn

What about the free standing bird feeders on a pole? That way they can't climb the slick pole ... you may even want to try greasing it to make it even slicker. I would not put it by a tree since it would be easy for them to jump from a close by tree of fence.
If you're not opposed to them being there & your just trying to keep them away form the bird feeders I would put up a few squirrel feeders, the kind that are wood and have like a little seat for them and you place a whole ear of feed corn on it.
I hope you get the problem solved.

? ReplyThanks, Amy - we actually did make squirrel feeders, in the beginning, and added the corn cobs or apples or whatever for them - but they polished the food off and greedy little beings that they are, they then ran to the bird food....................
Thanks for the suggestions and advice - I'm GOING to beat the little beings!

? ReplyAmy's ideas are excellent.
Additionally there is such a thing as a squirrel baffle.
Sold on line.
But here's a homemade one:

And a bunch of other sites telling how to make them, different kinds.
Reading all these should keep you out of trouble Carolyn, LOL

Thank you, Judy and Amy - what I didn't mention is that there are free standing poles, WITH baffles on the poles, I do grease the poles, they are not near trees.....................maybe it's just that North Carolina squirrels are smarter than the average bear!
I am anxious to use the links, Judy......repellents, particularly..... THANKS, bunches, to both of you!
? ReplyExcellent site,Judy - the first one - loved the video! and good info/directions on the google link.............

? ReplyI called my mom in Alaska because she was always having problems with the squirrels and her bird feeders. All her feeders are hanging so she went to lowes and got sheets of tin, cut them into circles a little bigger then the feeder and shapped into a dome or cone. Attach it just above the feeder. When the squirrels climbed down onto the tin they slid right off!!! She said you can do this with pole feeder as well but you need to make the circle a little bigger and attach it just below the feeder. She also keeps peanuts on a tree stump in the front yard so they will go there instead of the feeders. In Alaska you can't ship the wildlife to the woods cause everywhere is the woods!!! Haha. Hope this helps.

Don't have any other suggestions as these are all great. I have a problem with a squirrel also but it isn't keeping it out of my feeders it's getting it to move out of my house. We had one find its way into the house when it got cold and it spent the winter in our cellar living on the dog food that it stole. I didn't mind it then as I felt sorry for it as it was winter and if we put it out it would freeze but now I want it to leave and it wants to stay. We got a trap and it figured out how to trip it without getting caught, I tried leaving a window open so it could escape and only ended up withbugs in the house. We're at our wits ends as to how to get it to leave. So any suggestions.
Thanks,
Nancy
? ReplyNancy, if you were lucky enough to have a Maine Coon Cat, and kept it in the cellar, I'll bet the squirrel would gladly move on......................they are HUGE house cats, very scary! Well, not reallly, but the squirrel would think twice about taking it on.............
Carolyn
? ReplyMy little dog won't allow cats in the house, they scare him ;-) but that sounds like a plan.
Nancy
? ReplyNancy,
Can you put your dog in a kennel for a few days and "rent" a cat from a friend? It would only be for a little while, but I bet it would do the trick.
