So with the new listing rules over there, I can't list commercial beads for jewelry making unless I know the year they were manufactured! Lol, what is going on over there? I have been paring back my Etsy shop for some time now, but I still list things once in a while just because I do make sales...but the site has gotten so strange - I can't even relate to it anymore. Between the two, I knew I'd be putting most of my focus on my Zibbet shop, but now I'm really thinking I'm going to do away with the Etsy store altogether sometime in the near future.
Well, look for a variety of semi-precious gemstone beads in my shop here on Zibbet! Forget Etsy - it's all going here now...

I suppose the year of manufacture for commercial beads has to do with the content restrictions that are in place. Etsy likely wants to protect itself from government challenges about prohibited metals in beads (lead specifically). It is important for any business to know the content of the materials, especially when they might be available to children. Bead sellers should have the bead content information available.
If you don't like Etsy, it's not a big social issue, just close your shop and move on. Or, you could comply with Etsy requirements and continue making a profit with Etsy sales.
? ReplyThat's very helpful about possible lead content and restrictions...I may look into contacting the supplier to see if they can give me some information since none of the beads I purchased came with any info. other than the dimensions, shapes and a general idea of the types of gemstones the mix of beads contained.
Thanks - I'm aware I can close my shop there at any time, or comply with Etsy's restrictions. That is a very good common sense statement. However, as a customer of both Etsy and Zibbet, I do enjoy coming to the forums from time to time to discuss what's going on with these sites...and as it turns out, I got some very helpful information from you, so thanks!
? ReplyClosing a shop doesn't mean deserting the venue, as you can still use the forums for informational purposes.
I have my empty shop on Etsy, almost empty on ArtFire, a couple items here, and most on CraftIsArt.com. I can then hold my name for all and use my FaceBook page to direct customers to where I currently want to be active. I think it's a common sense approach to business.
I left my items on Etsy expire. Since there is a cost to list, it is important that the item sells. My items just weren't selling well. Rather than pay to re-list non-selling items, I just let them expire. It is difficult to sell jewelry online. ArtFire wasn't better at sales and the web site was too confusing. Zibbet and CraftIsArt take a much simplistic approach to design to focus more on business.
