I spend the majority of my time at my computer. I've been noticing my butt getting wider and wider from all this sitting. Obviously I am not getting enough exercise. In addition, I tend to not want to stop work to cook. I make easy things for supper like grilled cheese or pasta or pizza, burritos and tostadas smothered in cheese. Quick food.

According to the American Heart Association between 60 and 70% of Americans are either overweight or obese.

ME ME ME ME!

I swear you were the walls in my house yesterday!

The way I feel right now, I don't have anything positive to add right now. But on good days I will.

My weight...hmmm. I have been tracking, and when we moved out of my in-laws house I dropped 5 lbs right away, but since then haven't done much more. I end up right around 148lbs. and at 5"3 1/2" that is overweight. My belly says so.

So, count me in here. I think having 'buddies' in this quest will help immensely. Now, maybe I should walk to the pet store to get the parrots their special Nutriberries.

WOW!   Not to belittle this - truly, I admire any and all who seek to better their health - but I just gotta ask you, Re- becca - are the Nutriberries fit for human consumption?  They sound edible................

lol Grandma. If you like bird seed then well, you can eat them. the dog does. :)

they are balls of nutrient rich bird seed. nutrient rich for parrots. not sure how they are for humans, or dogs.

(not to be gross, but you can see the bird seed in the dog poop, so that makes me think us mammals can digest them too well)

I weighed myself at Publix today on the big scale. No scale at home.

155 pounds and I am only 5'2".

Great place to weigh oneself just before food shopping.

After gasping at the scale, this is what went into my cart, mostly organic (O), when possible.

carrots, O

broccoli, O

garlic

mushrooms

spinach, O

romaine lettuce, O

celery, O

bananas

grapes, O

1 plum tomato

live grain bread, Ezekiel bread, O

eeeek, 1 pint of Hagan Das run raisin ice cream, to be eaten in micro servings, not the whole tub at one sitting at the computer. LOL

The above should feed 2 people for a week when I add items I have on hand:

organic brown rice

cous cous

barley, and other grains

dried beans, lentils, pintos, aduki, black beans, navy beans, kidney beans

spices and herbs

That's what I ate back when I was skinny.

Judy, you are SO much better with the legumes than I am!! LOL Seriously! I absolutely detest them! For protein, I'll have protein shakes with whey protein. I loooooooooove those, really! And I make them with water - really. :o)  When I want an extra special treat, I'll throw the mix in a blender with some water and some fruit and ice cubes and it's just delicious!

I adore grapes and some other fruits, so I add those in during the day. I used to be a certified trainer and teach classes at the YMCA, so I'll add some little tips for us all from time to time. :o)

First little morsel of coolness: I used to tell everyone I taught to ditch the scale as much as possible. Really. It can be a major de-motivator, stressor, set off panic attacks, and actually cause you to go in the other direction. If you weigh yourself, be consistent: Same scale, same time of day, wearing about the same things, and only about once a week. If you're exercising you will be building muscle. Here's what you need to know about muscle:

1) Muscle weighs almost 5x what fat does (see how the scale can fake you out on that?).

2) Every pound of muscle you have burns as many calories as running 3 miles/day just to stay alive (how cool!)

3) After age 30, women tend to lose almost a pound of muscle (sometimes more! eek!) per year

4) Women can (and should!) add weight training to their regimen. It helps keep muscle mass, it helps your heart, it increases bone density (think "I don't want osteoporosis"), and 99% of women do not have the physical makeup required to bulk up like a guy

Soooooo.........grab a pair of light dumbbells and do a couple curls. Try for 3 sets of 8. Takes less than 5 minutes and the results last forever. :o)

Actually I am not. I WAS back in the 70s and 80s.

I have lots of beans, but I haven't been good at cooking and eating them. I want to get back to doing it.

Marguerite HummelPermalink Reply by Marguerite Hummel on October 15, 2011 at 2:07pm Judy, even that's better than me, honestly. I will only eat green beans and yellow wax beans - period. That's why I keep my protein shakes around. ? Reply

Another reason I haven't had the beans cooking every day because the crock pot I have is terrible. I've been wishing for one that the crock is removable. The kind I have is so difficult to wash.

My excuse for not cooking rice these days, is because I want a rice cooker with stainless steel bowl. Not teflon. I gave mine away because it had non-stick coating on it, thinking I would buy the stainless steel type and never did.

Lame excuses, I know.

LOL Not brave enough for the second half of the challenge just yet, but I have lost 20# over the past couple of months because of being able to (finally!!!) get back into the gym. After years of being a gym rat (and a power lifter LOL) I had a surgery go horribly wrong which left me with only 40-degrees of bend in my leg for almost two years. As a result of my gait mechanics being off, my hip dropped almost 2" on the left side and starting rotating forward - having the effect of spinning my spine and crushing the discs from the bottom up.

I had another procedure to correct that, some PT and I'm back in the gym. And I love every second of it! I gained A LOT of weight during that time due to forced inactivity and severe depression, so I'm in the process of taking it off. However, I find myself in a wee bit of a quandary. The knee that was operated on has had 4 surgeries and a closed manipulation. It's in stage 4 OA (bone on bone articulation) and you can pretty much hear it from several feet away. They won't do a knee replacement yet because they say I'm too young and want to put it off for 8 years. LOL I feel that's horse puckey. I'm going to be getting the Synvisc injections over the next few weeks. I'm not letting it slow me down, though. I've decided to just keep doing what I'm doing. Chances are that it will blow my knee out within the next few months (I currently leg press 500# on the vertical and 275# on the horizontal) and I walk to the gym and back. My thinking is that I'm getting a lot of benefit out of what I'm doing (psychologically and physically) and preparing my whole body for the eventual surgery. I'm also speeding up the process because the body heals slower as you age.  .......LOL and I know there's going to be a ton of pain, but it's alright - I live with that daily.

Soooo......besides the exercise, I have pretty much cut out just about all sweets. I tend to get "addicted" to them - really. Just a little will set me off on a bit of a binge with them, so I'm quite careful. I also eat a TON of salad. I don't worry too much about the dressing (or the cream in my coffee LOL) because I don't eat a good deal more besides that. My appetite has been seriously curbed and I feel a lot better.

I'll put up some of my fave veggie recipes for everyone later. :o)

This article from the Washington Post may be of interest.  It reports on a study that suggests that what you eat is more important than counting calories when it comes to controlling weight.

The chart to the right (taken from the New England Journal of Medicine report on the study) summarizes results.  The farther bars extend to the right, the more weight was gained by people in the study who ate the particular class of food daily.  When a bar extends to the left, it indicates weight was lost by people in the study who daily ate those foods.

The chart shows potatoes (even plain old boiled potatoes) are particularly bad.  People who daily eat nuts, fruit, and yogurt showed the most weight loss.

There were some strange results.  For example, drinking low fat or skim milk was associated with weight gain, while drinking whole milk was associated with weight loss.

Here at Clarify headquarters yogurt has become a daily addition to breakfast.  I have found that it is super easy and inexpensive to make from powdered skim milk.  And we have fruit every day at breakfast and lunch.  And most days we have some nuts for a pre-supper snack (along with wine--since there is no mention of wine on the chart it must have no effect on weight, right?).

We still have pizza at least once a month, but do not put potatoes on it.

Marguerite HummelPermalink Reply by Marguerite Hummel on October 15, 2011 at 1:48pm LOL Claranne, I don't put potatoes on my pizza, either...they just don't do well with the sauce.  That's a very, very interesting chart! As someone who absolutely doesn't drink milk, that part was interesting to me, too. I do, however, love my Greek yogurt!! Yummy! ? Reply

that is interesting, Claranne!

some things to consider for sure.

I only drink diet soda when I drink it, which is seldom. I don't like whole milk. so guess that balances out?

an interesting note, is that when hubby had gallbladder problems, he was a vegetarian that ate lots of cheese. Had an issue with his gallbladder, and instead of surgery changed his diet to cut out fat, of all kinds. Meaning no dairy at all, no butter, no oil except olive oil, and not much of it. He began eating chicken, fish, and very lean pork. He lost 30 lbs right away. (he was overweight). after a while, lost another 30. Now, is very lean!

I like cheese, mayo, and well, most things with fat in them. I have put on just over 30lbs since I got married (18 years ago, 3 kids ago).

I realize what the answers are to lost weight, and realize that I should not expect to be the weight I was when I got married. I would just like to be around 8 lbs lighter. Not a tall order really.

But I have kids. Who like chips, ice cream, and normal food. We already eat pretty healthy thanks to hubby's diet. So, it comes down to exercise for me, and willpower. Those ebb and flow. I need more consistency, more veggies, and it seems whole grains and yogurt!

The kicker is, whole grain breads and such are noticeably more expensive! That seems backwards.

I do buy wheat bread when I can, and the kids really don't mind it, but prefer the white. So I mix it up.

But I can't wait for some good recipe's and just knowing I will need to check in with my buddies here will hopefully keep me on my toes.

I DID walk to the pet store this afternoon, so got a walk in. And still need to decide what is for dinner.

Will try to keep it healthy. :)
