SEO Quick Tip: Quality Backlinks

Selecting good keywords to include in your item titles, descriptions and tags is a vital component of SEO. It’s those keywords that search engines use to find your item pages in their massive databases. However, backlinks play an important role in pagerank. A backlink is an incoming link to a webpage from another webpage. Pagerank refers to a webpage’s position in a search engine results page (SERP). Although the number of backlinks is considered, the quality of the backlinks to a page is probably more important in determining pagerank.

The important thing for you and me to know about backlinks is that it’s important for our shops and item pages to have quality backlinks so that our pages are ranked higher on search results pages. Quality backlinks come from sites with similar content and that have high pageranks themselves. It’s important for this backlinking to occur organically. Contrived backlinking can have a negative impact on pageranking and isn’t advised. Links from well established content related blogs and websites are desirable.

Be cautious about agreeing to every link exchange offer that comes your way. These solicitations usually are coming from websites deliberately seeking to accumulate backlinks and often lack the quality that you want and need for your shop. While quality backlinks will improve pagerank, poor backlinks can also decrease a page’s pagerank.
