8. Shipping Easy

MainMy PageMembersForumGroupsChatPhotosOrtist All Discussions My Discussions Add Chastity00 Shipping Easy Posted by Chastity00 on November 23, 2011 at 11:56am in Site Help / Questions View Discussions

I got the newsletter and have heard so much about the launch of shipping easy.  However, I like to ship with paypal. I find it to be easy and like the way it works.  Are we going to be able to continue to ship with Pay Pal? I run 3 other on line shops and I want to keep it as simple for me as possible.  I like shipping with Pay Pal and I don't want to change.

Interesting concept.  This seems to be directed to sellers living in the US.  I live in Canada and this would not work for me because 99% of my customers are in the US.  I sell small items (beads, earring, pendants, etc) so it's still far cheaper to send small packets to the USA via airmail then a courier service.

Also, because 99% of my customers are in the USA, I have to take every packet I mail to the post office because the customs forms need to be stamped.  Any other system would not work for Canadian sellers shipping to the USA.  I'm sure I'm not the only Canadian seller whose main customer base is in the USA.

That's the process here in the USA too, international packages have to be taken to the Post Office.

As I recall, you can fill out the custom forms online when you use PayPal shipping.  But you would still have to drop it off.

Have you checked out the paypal ship now link?   Maybe you already know this, but when you pay for and print out the shipping label through Paypal it does all the customs info for you, so you can drop it in any post box, without having to go into the Post Office at all. It doesn't give  a discount on small packet, but it will print out the label.   There is a discount on expedited parcels (to Canada and the US).  Quite a substantial one, actually, over and above the Venture One discount.  You don't even need to have sold the item through Paypal, just go in through the ship now link and it will work.  The only thing it won't do is print out letter post shipping labels.  That's what I would like, then I could stop having to buy stamps and try and make them add up to the right amounts for international shipping!! :)

I am curious, why do you have to get your customs labels stamped?  I use the green customs labels on letter post items and I just pop them in a drop box....no need to get them stamped.  Maybe it varies by Post Office...what the employees are willing to let by.

I ship mainly Light Packets (probably over 1,000) and the odd Small Packets to the USA. These require customs forms to be filled out and attached (the green customs labels have never been used on these types of packages).  I've been to a number of actual Canada Post office locations (not the sublets in drugstores) and this is the only way they will accept these packages for mailing.

I'd love it if there was an alternate way.

I'm on the Canada Post website right now to find out why I'm supposedly "required" to mail Light & Small packets at the post office.  So far I can't see anything that says it is mandatory.  Very interesting ... I'll keep reading.

It does say that a laser printer is required to print postage labels and I only have an inkjet.  I'm wondering if they just mean "printer" in general.

Thanks for the info!

I usually use letter post for buttons, but sometimes small packet or light packet, depending on what I am sending, I always put the green customs label on and have never had a problem so far (I'm in the high hundreds, not thousands yet! :)

Here's what I found on the Can Post site:

"Customers can deposit Small Packet and Light Packet items (including items processed online through the eBay shipping platform) at any one of the following locations:

a post officea street letter box (items processed by a Canada Post online shipping system only)."

Also it says it must have "a Small Packet CN22 Customs label with the Customs Declaration portion accurately completed".  The green label is a CN22.

I use an inkjet printer all the time to print my Paypal labels, never had a problem yet. I get the international labelopes free from the Canada Post Venture One supplies shop online.  Do you use it? There are all sorts of little freebies there.  The labelopes are what you put the paypal label inside. They are clear plastic with a peel off sticky back that attaches to the package.  And when I say label I just mean a half sheet of printer paper stuck inside the labelope.

I send most of my buttons letter post, actually.  But I do sell used books and my pottery online as well and that's when I use the paypal the most.  You should try it, it really is great.  Also it doesn't show the amount you pay for shipping, so if you have a handling fee included in your shipping charges then your customer doesn't get upset when postage is more than actual.  I'm not saying jack up the shipping, just that there's room for recovering at least your packaging costs in there...  Ok, now I'm just rambling!! :)  If I can be of any help if you decide to try Paypal shipping, just ask.

Sarah

Thanks again!

I too found where it says the Packets can be put in a mailbox.  I'd still put mine the mail slot at the drugstore postal counter though as the value of my packages are usually $20-$50 and there is no insurance included on Light Packets. (I self insure).  I don't trust neighbourhood postal boxes, but I've got a drugstore right across the street that has a Canada Post outlet, so I'd just drop it at their mail slot without having to stand in line!

The Small Packet customs form (white 4" x 5" form) is also called a CN22.  According to the post office this must go on light packets & small packets.  This is interesting because none of the outlets I go to have ever applied a green label to my packages.  I can't take a chance on screwing up a mailing, because all the beads and pendants I make are one of a kind creations and I'd be out the money if my package didn't make it because of incorrect paperwork etc.)

I am lucky, I live in a rural area of Cape Breton, NS with daily mail pick up, so just have to pop them in my mailbox and they are picked up by my great mail lady. :)  I don't worry about theft.  Also there is a small post office about 20 minutes away with a super Postmistress.  I am spoiled, really. :)  As a matter of interest my husband and I both do a lot of shipping and we were concerned when we switched to Paypal a few years ago that it would take away from the 'quota' that our little post office needs to stay open.  Our Postmistress checked and as long as it goes through her Post office it counts...ok, now I'm really really rambling! :)

No rambling at all!  I enjoy hearing from other Canadians and how they go about their online sales & shipping.  I really appreciate your input! :)

I think they suggest laser printers so that the ink won't smear if it becomes wet. I use an inkjet printer for mine... If you don't have one of their clear envelopes to attach to the package, just apply clear tape or a clear label over the postage label to protect it.

I use small pack and light packet air all the time and have never used the green customs label described.  The customs declaration is inputted online.
